Transfer folders between Mac and Windows
For:All users
No technical knowledge required.Moving a folder between macOS and Windows can otherwise mean preparing a compatible removable drive, configuring a network share, or uploading the folder to a service first. Those approaches add physical handling, network permissions, or an intermediary stored copy. WolfP2P streams the files between compatible browsers during one live transfer; the receiving operating system still governs valid names, paths, permissions, and destination behavior.
Why WolfP2P fits
WolfP2P provides a browser-based handoff when the computers can establish a direct connection. The current configuration uses host candidates only and provides no STUN-based traversal between separate private networks. There is no application or network share to configure, and a Compatible Browser preserves nested paths across the two systems.
The operating systems do not have to match. Filename rules still differ, so review the platform limitations below before transferring a large tree. Safe mode can retain recoverable progress if the connection is interrupted. For the broader migration checklist around applications, backups, and retiring the old machine, use Move Your Folders to a New Computer.
Before a cross-platform transfer, check names that Windows commonly restricts, files that depend on macOS resource information, and shortcuts or aliases that point outside the selected folder. WolfP2P rejects unsupported destination paths rather than silently inventing different names.
When the two computers are on the same network, a local browser connection can carry the files over Wi-Fi or Ethernet without an internet upload/download round trip. Online coordination is still required.
Before you start
The browsers need a direct network path. The current configuration gathers host candidates only, with no STUN traversal between separate private networks and no TURN file relay. Even a shared network can block the connection. Complete folder preservation and disk-backed large-file handling require a Compatible Browser, such as current Chrome, Edge, or Brave, with the required capabilities confirmed by WolfP2P's live check. Both peers must remain online while file bytes are moving. Keep both transfer tabs open until completion. Confirm that the receiver can write to the chosen destination and has enough free space for the transfer mode.
How to transfer folders between Mac and Windows
Inspect the folder for platform dependencies
Look for names Windows cannot represent, macOS resource information, aliases, shortcuts, and files that depend on permissions or extended attributes.
Decide which system will receive
Choose a writable destination with enough space and consider how the receiving applications expect the files and paths to be organized.
If the browser refuses Documents or reports system files, create a subfolder inside Documents and select that instead. See folder permissions.
Connect across operating systems
Create a tunnel on the source computer and privately invite the destination computer; the browsers must be able to connect directly.
Review the cross-platform offer
Select the source folder. The receiver checks the paths, file count, and size before accepting into the chosen destination.
Transfer and test on the receiving system
Keep both browsers active, recover verified progress if needed, and open representative files while checking names and nested paths on the other operating system.
One browser tab represents one tunnel. Reloading or browser-restoring the same tab can resume its session, but genuinely closing the tab ends that session.
WolfP2P preserves file bytes and supported relative paths, but not the source file's modification date and time. A transferred file receives the current date and time when it is written at the destination.
Questions and answers
Must both computers use the same operating system?
No. The transfer runs between compatible browsers. The available folder and destination features depend more on browser capability than on matching operating systems.
Are folder paths preserved across platforms?
Nested relative paths are preserved on compatible browsers. Filesystem rules still differ: names valid on one platform may be restricted or represented differently on another.
Do file permissions and macOS metadata move too?
WolfP2P transfers selected file bytes and relative paths. It does not preserve source modification dates and times; transferred files receive the current date and time when written at the destination. Do not assume that access-control lists, ownership, resource forks, extended attributes, aliases, or shortcuts retain platform-specific behavior.
Must the computers share the same Wi-Fi network?
A shared network can provide a direct path, although its policies may block it. The current configuration has no STUN or TURN service, so do not assume it can connect computers behind separate private networks.
